How to price a cake

A cake price has to pay for three things: what went into it, the hours you spent on it, and a profit for the business on top of your wage. Ingredients are the smallest of the three.

Cake cost = ingredients + packaging + (hours ร— hourly rate) + other costs

Cake price = cake cost ร— (1 + markup %)

Price per serving = cake price รท servings

Worked example - 8 inch birthday cake

The cake the calculator opens with: two layers, buttercream, decoration, board and box, at 2026 US retail prices.

Ingredients, decoration, board and box$11.86
Labor: 3 hours ร— $20$60.00
Cake cost$71.86
Markup 20%$14.37
Cake price$86.23
Per serving (20 party servings)$4.31

Ingredients are 14% of the price. Double the decorating time and the price moves far more than any change in butter or flour would move it - which is why bakers who price from ingredients alone underprice every detailed cake. Full ingredient breakdown: how much it costs to make an 8 inch birthday cake.

Price per serving, not per cake

Customers compare cakes by size, so quote by the serving. A decorated 8 inch buttercream cake sells for roughly $50 to $90 in the US: $4 to $8 a slice cut 12-16 ways at home, or $2.50 to $4.50 per party serving. Sculpted, fondant and multi-tier wedding work goes well above that. If the calculator gives you a per-serving price far below that range, check the hours first - they are usually undercounted.

Two cakes with the same ingredients can differ by four hours of piping. A per-serving base price plus the hours for the design is how you keep a simple cake competitive and a detailed one profitable. More on multipliers and per-serving pricing in the bakery pricing formula.

How much does a custom cake cost?

Party servings per size and what the cake comes to at three per-serving prices. Pick the column that matches your market, then check it against your own costs in the calculator above.

Size Servings at $2.50 at $3.50 at $4.50
6 inch round 12 $30.00 $42.00 $54.00
8 inch round 20 $50.00 $70.00 $90.00
9 inch round 24 $60.00 $84.00 $108.00
10 inch round 28 $70.00 $98.00 $126.00
12 inch round 40 $100.00 $140.00 $180.00
2 tiers, 6 + 8 inch 32 $80.00 $112.00 $144.00
3 tiers, 6 + 8 + 10 inch 60 $150.00 $210.00 $270.00
12 cupcakes 12 $30.00 $42.00 $54.00

Servings from the Wilton party chart (1.5 x 2 inch slices, 4 inch tall cake). Cut wedges at home and an 8 inch cake gives 12-16.

Cake pricing FAQ

How much should I charge for a cake?
Add up your costs - ingredients, packaging, delivery and your time at an hourly rate - then put a markup on top. An 8 inch buttercream birthday cake with $11.86 of ingredients and 3 hours at $20 an hour comes to $86.23 at a 20 percent markup, or $4.31 a party serving. That sits inside the usual $50 to $90 for a decorated 8 inch buttercream cake in the US; sculpted and multi-tier cakes go well above it.
How do I calculate the cost of a cake?
List every ingredient with the amount the recipe uses and the price you pay for it, including frosting, filling, coloring, the cake board and the box. Cost is the sum of quantity times price per unit, converted between units (a 5 lb bag of flour against 2.5 cups in the recipe). That is your ingredient cost; the cake cost also includes your time.
How much should I charge per hour for baking?
There is no standard rate. Use the hourly wage you would accept for skilled work where you live; a typical starting point for home bakers is $15 to $25. Count every hour the order takes: baking, cooling, leveling, filling, crumb coat, decorating, cleanup, client messages and delivery. Decorating is usually where the hours go.
What markup should I add to a cake?
Your wage is already in the cost, so the markup is what the business keeps: equipment, cakes that fail, slow weeks. 15 to 30 percent on total cost is a typical starting point, and a rush fee of about 25 percent on top is a typical surcharge. A 20 percent markup is a 16.7 percent profit margin, because margin is measured against the price, not the cost.
How many servings are in an 8 inch cake?
The Wilton party chart counts 20 servings for an 8 inch round cut into 1.5 x 2 inch slices. Cut at home in wedges it is more like 12 to 16. Price per serving follows the count you quote, so pick a size preset and then type your own servings if you cut bigger slices.
How do I price a tiered cake?
Add the servings of each tier (6 + 8 inch is 32 party servings, 6 + 8 + 10 is 60) and enter the ingredients for all tiers. Labor grows faster than ingredients: dowels, stacking, a sturdier board and a careful delivery all take time, so count the hours honestly rather than scaling the single-tier price.
How much should I charge for cookies?
The same way as a cake: ingredients, time, markup. A batch of 24 chocolate chip cookies is about $7.70 of ingredients (32 cents a cookie), and US bakeries sell them for around $2.00 each. Enter your cookie recipe above, choose Custom and type the number of cookies as servings: the price per serving is your price per cookie. Decorated sugar cookies are priced by decorating time, so count those hours.
Does the calculator save my cake?
"Save this cake" keeps the ingredients, the servings and the price per serving in your free MarginCub library, so the cost updates when an ingredient price changes. Hours, hourly rate and markup are not stored yet - note them in the recipe notes.
